Words and phrases are powerful
Today, Rick Sanchez (in my opinion, a total dork who tries to be 'hip on the twitters'), in exasperation, said that President Obama should be able to defend himself against people who don't believe he is a Christian. Sanchez then said, "I mean, he's the cotton-picking president of the United States."
Now, I don't think Sanchez used this intentionally as a racist turn of phrase (I just don't think using that phrase should allow you to EVER call yourself 'hip), but it's interesting to think about phrases, the histories of the phrases we use and the words we use. I'm the LAST one to insinuate that there are any "bad" words, only interpretations and the meanings behinds the words we use, but it's always interesting to think about the other person's perspective, I guess.
